CELA Challenges Licenses

CELA (Canadian Environmental Law Association) and Sierra Club Canada through CELA counsel filed in Federal Court two Applications for Judicial Review of the licenses issued by CNSC (Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission) to ship 16 radioactive steam generators.

From statement on CELA website:

These Judicial Review Applications challenge the legality of the Licences, on the basis of non-compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, which the CNSC stated it did not have to apply, as well as on the basis of failure to follow the rules of natural justice in the case of the export licence, and the inadequacy or absence of the CNSC’s reasons for its decisions.

Bruce Power heard by federal Commons Committee

March 8th -Standing Committee on Natural Resources, RNNR, will hear today from Bruce Power and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, and will meet with other invitees Thursday regarding the shipment of 16 steam generators to Sweden for recycling, and the return of radioactive waste. Ross Lamont, Bruce Power Community and Government Relations Manager, provided a short list of the others, which contains little opposition. Mike Smith, Warden of Bruce County, is attending and maintains Bruce Power is a valued employer and emphasises on their safety record. Huron-Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan, a member of shipment-opposed Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, will attend in favour of the shipment. Dr. Hazel Lynn, Grey Bruce Medical Officer of Health, is also expected to be heard from the Committee.

Council of Canadians Campaign

March 2nd, Council of Canadians sent out this “action allert” to “demand that Ontario refuse permission for radioactive shipments on the Great Lakes.” Sign and send a letter with the click of a button to the Ontario Government.

An excerpt from the call to action:

On arrival in Sweden, the steam generators will be melted down into scrap metal and sold in consumer markets to be made into household and other items.

There has been widespread opposition to this shipment from First Nation communities, city mayors, US senators, environmental groups, social justice organizations. Organizations in Europe have also expressed opposition including the Swedish Environmental Movement’s Nuclear Waste Secretariat, Nuclear Free Local Authorities (UK and Ireland), Friends of the Earth Norway and Sortie du nucléaire (France).

Bruce Power must still obtain permits from municipalities along the travel route, as well as the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Transport Canada and the US Department of Transport. Bruce Power must also obtain approval from the UK, Denmark and Norway to pass through their waters.

G20 Voices of the People: The People’s Summit

Saturday of G20 in Toronto had a great start for peaceful demonstration and free speech. It was the people’s summit of an eclectic mix. Queen’s Park was a centre for united groups and citizens to come together in peaceful demonstration. This video contains interviews with some of these groups and individuals, and has footage of the peace march through the streets. Interviews from Queen’s Park include: We Are Change Niagara, CUPE, Council of Canadians, G420, and others.

How did the British come to Canada? In June of 1701 we started an ancient ceremony with France and her indigenous allies, that ended a 92 year war here. This was known as “The Great Peace of Montreal” and we saw an opportunity to spread the peace to the rest of the world through the bloodline hierarchy. We met with the British in Albany later that summer and presented them “two row wampum” and pledged our lands in Ontario to share equally, in peace, forever.

The British wrote an account of that council and called it “Nanfan treaty”. It was our first attempt to spread the council of the great peace to the rest of the world. In 1710 we sent our emissaries to London in our second attempt to spread the great peace, the British called it “Four Indian Kings”. In 1923 we sent another emissary to join the “League of Nations” in our third attempt to spread the council of the great peace. We are the guardians of the formula for perpetual peace and we take our role quite seriously.

Now the world is in a state of constant warfare just like it was when we discovered the “kayanerakowa” through the “Peacemaker’s” teachings. The key to peace lies in the consensus process, backed by the knowledge that we are all equal and a part of the whole. Like in nature, the women have the responsibility for the children and the community they bring them into. This is women business and men cannot attend women’s council unless for a specific reason. Restore the natural right of the women in the world. We learned from the wolves the power of unity of mind. They became the top predator in North America by utilizing the one mind technique.

Now is the time for all of the people to start listening with ears that hear and to see with clear eyes, there is a way of peace. Let us mark this 300th year anniversary of the “Four Kings” by starting a real dialogue for disclosing the end of the war problem here on Mother Earth and the beginning of perpetual peace through kayanerakowa, the council of the great peace

Balloon boy

A CBC reporter referred to it’s shape as a mushroom, but if you were in Colorado on Thursday, you could think you had seen an UFO. A boy, Falcon Heene, was reported by his brother that he took flight in his father’s helium balloon. In two hours it traveled 80km and came to a soft landing. Rescuers were quick to discover the boy was not in the balloon; he was found later safe at home.

The Friends of the Right to Water is promoting a two-tiered strategy. We are encouraging our international partners to work with the UN to adopt a convention or treaty on the right to water. We are also encouraging local groups to push their governments and courts to recognize the human right to water. This ‘inside-outside’ strategy will be the most effective way to accomplish our goals.
